Why use RINs versus VERs? First, there is accountability. RINs are regulated by the EPA and are readily indentifiable with unique serial numbers. Second, RINs are directly related to transportation. If looking to offset emissions caused by transportation then RINs are the closest thing to a direct offset there is. Finally, each RIN represents one gallon of renewable fuel. If you buy and retire one RIN, then additional renewable fuel will be produced which reduces our dependence on foreign oil.
Purchasing and retiring RINs decreases the supply of RINs in the market. Since refiners and importers of motor fuel must submit RINs to comply with the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), more renewable fuel will be produced to bring the RIN market into equilibrium.
